Music in the birthing room

Have you thought about if you'd like music during your birth? Even if you don't use it, music can be a valuable tool to help you move through the different stages of labor, possibly making labor less painful and shorter.

Think about the way you feel when you listen to a song that you love. Do you feel happy? Maybe loved and warm? Maybe a little more relaxed and at peace? Those feelings that you may experience while listening to your favorite tunes is due to the feel good hormones being released in your body. One hormone that may be released is oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone" a crucial hormone in helping to get labor started and progressing. It's due to these hormones and feelings that we experience which makes music such a valuable tool to help in labor. In fact, music has been shown to help laboring women experience less pain during labor, as it uses some of the same pathways in our brain. Research also has shown that labor may be shortened, if the laboring person is listening to music that they enjoy/relaxes them.

So what type of music should you choose?

For early labor, choose music that you enjoy listening to. Music that makes you feel good, uplifted, loved, warm and happy.

For active labor, choose music that helps to relax. This will help you get through the contractions and help to reduce pain.

For transition and pushing, choose music that helps to energize! You'll need all the energy that you can get to bring baby into the world!

For after baby is born, choose music that feels happy and celebratory or maybe you just want to have silence and enjoy those sweet moments with your baby.

As your Doula, we will go through a specific worksheet during our prenatal meetings to help you choose the right music for your birth, whether you use it or not!
